FIDE World Championship Match 2024 Rules & Regulations

FIDE has officially released the regulations for the much-awaited FIDE World Championship Match 2024, scheduled in Singapore from November 20 to December 14, 2024. This grand event will feature reigning champion GM Ding Liren defending his title against GM Gukesh D, who won the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament. The FIDE World Championship Match is one of the world’s most important and popular chess events. Taking place every two years, it involves eight of the best players in the world in the Candidates Tournament, which determines the Challenger and the reigning World Champion.

World Championship Match Technical Regulations

1. Match Format, Time control and Default time

  • The World Championship Match consists of fourteen games
  • The games are played using electronic clocks and boards approved by FIDE.
  • The time control for each game is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest
  • of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 41.
  • A player who arrives in the playing area after the actual start time of the game shall lose this game by default.

2. Draw by mutual agreement

The players cannot draw a game by agreement before black’s 40th move. A claim for a draw before black’s 40th
move is permitted only in cases of a draw by threefold repetition or a stalemate.

3. Conditions of victory

  • The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the World Championship Match. No further games shall be played.
  • If the score after fourteen games is equal, the tie-break shall be played as described below.

3.1 Tie-break Rules

2024 Rapid Playoff Rules
  • Four games of 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move
  • If the score remained level after these four games, a two-game rapid playoff of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move would follow.
  • If the score was still level after these games, the match would proceed to the next tie-break stage.
2024 Blitz Playoff Rules
  • A two-game blitz playoff of 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment per move
  • If the score remained level after these two games, a single game of 3 minutes for each player + 2 seconds increment per move
  • lf this game is drawn, another game of 3 minutes for each player + 2 seconds inerement per move will be played will colors reversed
  • This will be repeated until there is a decisive result

2023 MATCH Tie Break Rules

2023 Rapid Playoff Rules
  • Four games of 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move
  • If the score was still level after these four games, the match would proceed to the next tie-break stage.
2023 Blitz Playoff Rules
  • A two-game blitz playoff of 5 minutes plus a 3- second increment per move
  • If the score remained level after these two games another two-game blitz playoff would follow.
  • If the game is still tied, a single game of 3 minutes for each player + 2 seconds increment per move will be played
  • If this game is drawn, another game of 3 minutes for each player + 2 seconds increment per move will be played will colors reversed
  • This will be repeated until there is a decisive result

    4. Prizes

    The prize fund provided by the Organiser is two million five hundred (2,500,000) USD net of any applicable local taxes.

    The prize fund shall be divided as follows:

    a) Each player shall receive two hundred thousand (200,000) USD for each game won (including games won by forfeit), except the cases described in Article 4.5.2. b). The remaining balance of the prize fund shall be split equally between the players.
    b) If the final score is 7,5:6,5 with 13 decisive games or 8:6 with 14 decisive games, the prize money shall be divided as follows: the winner receives one million three hundred thousand (1,300,000) USD, the runner-up receives one million two hundred thousand (1,200,000) USD.
    c) If the winner is decided on tie-break, the prize money shall be divided as follows: the winner receives one million three hundred thousand (1,300,000) USD, the runner-up receives one million two hundred thousand (1,200,000) USD.

    One month before the first game of the World Championship Match, each player shall receive two
    hundred thousand (200,000) USD. This amount shall be deducted from the prize fund. The remaining balance
    shall be remitted to the players within fourteen working days after the completion of the World Championship
    Match.

    5. FIDE World Championship Match 2024 Rules & Regulations Schedule

    No postponement of any game is allowed & The schedule may be changed only upon approval of FIDE President.

      6. Drawing of Colours

      The draw for colours shall be conducted during the Opening Ceremony or during another special Ceremony if
      FIDE will decide to organise such ceremony in another time or place. The player who gets white in the first
      game shall have white in all odd standard games.
