You are right, i think Queen’s Gambit was a game change in the making of chess movies. It is just on another level of greatness. I have also watched Queen of Katwe, by Lupita and i guess it is also an awesome movie with an African setting. Another good one is Queen to Play, this is a 2009 classic, it was also a good one.
alphachessParticipantIt depends with your end goal. What do you wish to achieve? Do you want to be a grandmaster? Master? or just a club player. Also, age and the time you have available to do all this will matter. But for me, i divide my day into four parts. First portion, that is early morning, when am free i play as many games as possible. I balance between long time control and blitz (50/50). I always analyze all my games using stockfish.
Then next, i read a book that specifically handles my weakness. Like now am reading Silman’s Endgame book. Then next i do loads of tactics. I prefer timed tactics so that i can push myself to solve faster. It helps simulate the time pressure in real games. Then next i Just watch my favorite chess streamers like the Botez girls, Finegold, Hikaru or Batholomew on YouTube.
alphachessParticipantThanks for that great advice. My rating is currently 1800 on Lichess and 1650 on Chess.com, but not that stable, sometimes it can fall to 1300. But my official FIDE rating is about 1200. And yes, sometimes i play for long hours, get exhausted and start blundering more.
alphachessParticipantThis is awesome. I have even seen that the event will stream love on TikTok, Twitch and YouTube. I love having options. This will be great. Looking forward to this one. I always love to hear GM Hikaru Nakamura commentating.
alphachessParticipantThis will depend mostly on your play type. Whether you like attacking or just passively defending. But for me, i work best with responding with 1….d5. What i do nowadays, i don’t castle early. And if possible, exchange the black bishop early. I have always been messed up by the black bishop that sticks around on my kingside.
Also, since it d4 leads to mostly closed games, try as much as possible to keep your knights. They are good for closed games.
alphachessParticipantHe is right, for sub-2000, you should not be reading loads of opening books. Just do tactics to reduce blunders and get the patterns in your head. I would also advice that you don’t play blitz. Play classical and other longer games like correspondence that will allow you to think through each move.
I improved from sub-1000 to 1800 just by tactics and reading a few introductory books like those for Yasser Serwan and Silman.
February 15, 2021 at 11:18 am in reply to: Which books would you recommend for tactics training? #130170alphachessParticipantI found Improve Your Chess Tactics by Yakov Neishtadt to be the best, it has 700 well explained tactics and helps you through the thinking process. There is also another one by Susan Polgar called Chess Tactics for Champions. You cannot go wrong with these two. But i also suggest you do a lot of online tactics. Especially the timed one, it will help you see patterns faster.
alphachessParticipantFor sure Wesley deserves it. He played a really good game today. I personally loved it. Magnus today was really tired, you could see it his facial expression, he deserves a one week break before resuming serious chess tournaments.
alphachessParticipantMagnus’ performance has been dismal in this championship, his recent performance definitely put Wesley So in the front seat.
What do you think, is it Magnus or So?
